The vaping industry is always looking for new, innovative ways to improve vaping. And anything that can help improve the quality, potential safety and experience of vaping is certainly a positive. Recently, Aquios Labs has taken steps to bring a whole new revolution to vaping in the form of water-based vaping.

Can you vape water?

Some E-Liquids can contain a very small amount of water but generally, most are purely oil-based. This is mainly because conventional vape kits are not built to vaporise water. Some vapers try to introduce water to their vapes as it offers purer flavours among other benefits. But due to most kits not being built to handle less-viscous liquids, leaks and flooding are likely to occur.

What is water-based vaping?

Aquios Labs have developed new technologies that enable the vaping of E-Liquids with a water content of 30%. This might not sound like a lot, but the amount is huge and its implications even more so. Water-based vaping means literally that – vaping with water. Although at the moment, the first iterations by Aquios Labs offer only 30% water content, they are already looking at potentially increasing this. Not only have they engineered the perfect system to vaporise E-Liquid that contains water, but also specific formulated flavours and water-based E-Liquids to make the most of it.

What are the benefits of water-based vaping?

Some of the great benefits of water-based vaping include a purer taste to E-Liquids. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) has a slightly sweet taste that, especially in higher VG ratio E-Liquids, can potentially mask the intended flavour. Whereas water is tasteless and adding it to PG/VG E-Liquids, can help create a purer taste by essentially replacing some of the VG and minimising its own taste.

Water-based vaping also offers a smoother vapour and faster satisfaction when vaping. On a daily basis we inhale water, it makes up part of the oxygen we breathe and is therefore easily absorbed by our bodies. Much like the VG situation, reducing the amount of Propylene Glycol (PG) and replacing it with water, helps reduce throat irritation.

With water-based vaping, you can also help alleviate one of the most common problems that arise from vaping; a dry mouth. VG tends to absorb water which is why you might notice a dry mouth after vaping for a while. By reducing the VG amount and replacing it with water, you counteract the dehydrating effects of the vapour and create a more pleasant experience.

Are there any problems with vaping water?

One thing you’ll notice with a higher water amount in your E-Liquid is that the clouds produced by vaping won’t be as dense as normal. VG is responsible for thick cloud production which is why sub-ohm vapers usually use high VG ratio E-Liquids. Once you introduce water to the equation though it replaces some of the VG, and therefore cloud-chasers may not be as impressed with this new setup.

Similarly, those looking for a strong throat hit similar to smoking may find water-based vaping a little too light for them. And if we expand into the realms of purely water-based E-Liquids, flavourings could potentially be lost as water doesn’t tend to bond well with flavourings. Hence why currently water-based vaping E-Liquids contain some PG and VG.

The verdict

Overall water-based vaping may be suitable for some but not everyone will likely enjoy it. Although the benefits are there, some vapers who prize strong flavours and big clouds may be less likely to try it out.
