What is a vape coil?

A vape coil is one of the key components of an E-Cigarette. These are metal heating elements that commonly is a coiled wire but can come in different shapes, such as a small sheet of metal mesh. Vape coils are used to heat up and vaporise your E-Liquid/vape juice by passing an electric current through.

Do vape coils make a difference?

There are two main differences in vape coils that can change your vaping experience. Standard coils have a higher resistance than Sub-Ohm coils which work for completely different types of vaping. The higher the resistance, the less charge and E-Liquid that passes through them to be vaporised. Sub-Ohm coils however have super low resistance, less than 1.0ohms, meaning more wattage goes through them and more vape juice is vaporised. These types of coils provide bigger clouds and bigger flavours.

With the sheer variety of coils on offer, the different shapes and even materials that they are made from can make a difference to your vaping. For example, regular wire coils are most common but ceramic coils can have a longer lifespan due to the ceramic casing around the wire.

Do all coils fit all vapes?

In short, the answer is certainly no. Vape coils are not generally a universal fit and after often made with specific brands or products in mind. Due to the complexity of vape coils and the complexity and customisability of devices, it’s essential to check the coil you wish to buy is compatible with your device.

Check the brand and model of your device when considering replacement coils. The vast majority of compatible coils will be either made by the same brand or noted to have been made for those brands specifically.

There are also different types of coils for different types of devices. A pod kit or standard tank kit will have vastly different types of coils to Sub-Ohm kits. Likewise, higher-powered kits will need different coils to low powered ones. Checking what works with your specific device is key to not having a bad time vaping.

How do you know when the coil needs changing?

It’s quite easy to tell when your vape coil needs replacing, you’ll notice it either in sound or taste first. You might also notice less vapour being produced! But most commonly users experience a burnt taste or even a bubbling sound when drawing on their device. Generally, it’s believed a coil will last 1-2 weeks before it needs changing but this can vary with several factors. Using thicker E-Liquids or those that contain Nicotine Salts can kill your coil quicker, heavy vaping will also lead to your coil needing replacing quicker.

If you’re using a rebuildable coil however it’s more than likely that the coil is not at fault for your gurgling sounds. This is more likely to do with your wicking material/cotton. Simply replace the wicking material and you should notice it corrects itself. Rebuildable coils tend to last for a much longer time than stock coils – months at a time in comparison to stock coils.

How do you clean a burnt coil?

It’s awfully hard to clean a burnt coil properly that you’ll get a fresh vape again without swapping to a new one. Especially with stock coils, these tend to be too intricate and contained to clean. Rebuildable coils have got a better chance of being cleaned by removing the wicking material and running the coil under the tap before firing up briefly to dry the coil.

How long should you soak a coil?

Many new vapers don’t realise that when you first fill up your tank you need to let your coil and wicking material soak up E-Liquid before vaping. It’s important to leave your device for 5-10 minutes to allow your coil to soak as much E-Liquid as possible. This helps to avoid a dry or burnt hit when puffing. If you don’t allow it to soak beforehand then when you drag on your device, your coil may be heating up pockets of air and burning your wicking material rather than vape juice. When replacing your coil, if your kit requires it, you will need to repeat this measure.

How can I make my coils last longer?

As mentioned before, priming your coil by allowing it to soak in vape juice, is but one great way to make sure your coil lasts longer. Another way to maximise the life of your coil is to make sure you are using the right power setting for your coil. They all come with their minimum and maximum requirements, along with an optimum power setting to use – picking a setting closer to the maximum is likely to shorten your coil lifespan.

Being conscious of your vaping is also a good way to make your coil last longer. Rather than chain-vaping, as is easy to do especially when pressed for time, take a break between drags to allow the coil to soak more vape juice. This is vitally important for Sub-Ohm vaping which vaporises a lot more vape juice than standard devices.

Even the very E-Liquid you use can help to lengthen the life of your coils. Vape juice with 50:50 PG/VG ratios is optimum as they offer higher PG levels. This helps to thin out your E-Liquid a little and makes it easier for your coil to vaporise. Sub-Ohm vaping of course relies on thicker E-Liquid but those types of coils are more suited to tolerate thicker vape juice anyway.

Hopefully, some of these answers will help you with your coil maintenance. The most important thing to remember with your coils is to do your research. Making sure your coil is the correct one for your device and how to look after your coil, will help you have an enjoyable vaping time.
